Practical, transparent governance focused on students, employees, families, and taxpayers.
Live within our means, protect essential educational services, review contracts carefully, maintain appropriate reserves, and explain important financial decisions clearly.
Invest in campus safety, emergency preparedness, functioning building systems, modern technology, and preventive maintenance before problems become emergencies.
Respect professional judgment, strengthen collaboration, provide classroom resources and professional development, and pursue competitive conditions within the District's means.
Treat paraprofessionals, aides, custodians, clerical, food-service, maintenance, technology, and other support professionals as essential partners.
Use clear project scopes, competitive procurement, appropriate oversight, long-range planning, and transparent reporting for taxpayer-supported projects.
Keep the Board focused on policy, fiscal oversight, accountability, and public representation while maintaining a professional relationship with the Superintendent.
Make public information accessible, listen carefully, celebrate student and employee accomplishments, and strengthen trust among schools, families, and the community.
Proven public service
John has helped guide district governance through changing educational, financial, facilities, personnel, and community conditions. His board work has included fiscal oversight, personnel matters, educational policy, employee agreements, school safety, facilities, infrastructure, and leadership in the responsible use of public resources.
Meet John
John Curiel is a longtime member of the Westside Union School District Board of Trustees and currently serves as Vice President. His colleagues have also selected him to serve as Board President.
His governing philosophy is that boards should establish clear policy and accountability while respecting the professional expertise of teachers, classified employees, administrators, and other educational professionals.
John's central goal for the next term is to build stronger community support for Westside Union School District's schools while maintaining stable governance, responsible fiscal leadership, safe facilities, and productive relationships with the people who serve students every day.
